THE ETHICS OF LITERARY TRANSLATION

Abstract: This article examines the ethical considerations inherent in literary 
translation, exploring the delicate balance between fidelity to the source text and the 
translator's responsibility to the reader. It argues that ethical translation transcends 
mere  linguistic  accuracy,  requiring  a  deep  understanding  of  the  source  culture, 
sensitivity to the author's intent, and a commitment to preserving the literary qualities 
of the original work. The article delves into the complexities of cultural appropriation, 
representation,  and  the  translator's  role  in  shaping  the  reader's  perception  of  the 
source  text.  Literary  translation  is  not  simply  a  technical  exercise  but  a  cultural 
exchange. This article explores the ethical implications of translating texts that carry 
significant cultural baggage, highlighting the importance of cultural sensitivity and 
awareness. It examines the potential for cultural appropriation and misrepresentation, 
emphasizing  the  translator's  duty  to  ensure  that  the  translation  accurately  and 
respectfully conveys the nuances of the source culture while remaining accessible to
